            After five years I lived in the city of Melbourne , I want to share my opinion is the best example of how a good system of primary education in Australia . Incidentally my three children to school in Clayton North Primary School. Whenever escort shuttle , always joy , excitement , and fun atmosphere radiated from their faces . They are always chattering about what is happening at school. For example, the small Sora told me enthusiastically that he was awarded " student of the week" for avid reader and always smile to his friends when they go to class .

From the stories that light , I saw that the school in Australia is able to present a pleasant atmosphere for learning . In this kangaroo country , students are taught mathematical concepts were placed in culture teaches logical thinking in speech .             The children are taught the practice of a logic " natural event " and then invited to find a formula that through direct experimentation . An approach that combines all three aspects of the teaching process to think , if the taste , and if the intention ( action ) . The students are trained how to have the life skills , the habit of reading every night , tell me what had brought from home in front of the class ( show and tell ) , music , and learn to socialize .
            A learning process that can foster the ability to empathize and respect each other . Its main objective is to evaluate the school in applying the methods of teaching and learning ( curriculum ) as measured through test results of their students . Thus , students are not burdened to pass or not .
            To sum up in an Australian school children are not fed by the punishment , memorizing formulas , the burden of subjects even national exam performance was fantastic . They are only trained in life skills through cooking lessons , carpentry , gardening , foreign language recognition , and the cultivation of a positive character early on. To teach innovation and critical thinking and rational , Australia to train students from elementary to always read and reflect on reading through the arguments that are scalable and essay writing were able to exceed the limits of their imagination .
            Campaign ' mental revolution of the nation ' , not just political jargon , but has been practiced in primary schools in Australia .             Incidentally my elder son , Aliya Zahra school was chosen as captain when he was in the sixth grade . He elected not not only because the program offers and courage argued , but because of its ability to respect the opinions of others .
            When is this atmosphere can be found and enjoyed by our children in schools Indonesia ? I hope , stories about school fun it can be collected together and massively distributed to schools in the archipelago . Perhaps the effort that will help add insight and motivation for teachers , parents , and children in Indonesia.
            So that parents and stakeholders in education in Indonesia can think critically and not get bogged down by jargon " internationalization " is only in a foreign language and in cooperation with foreign institutions . For all students from all walks of life can easily feel that internationalization is not only learning with expensive facilities and advanced technology , but rather emphasize the educational aspects of the character that actually has been taught by the ancestors of the nation .

Belajar dari Bersekolah di Australia

Setelah lima tahun lebih saya tinggal di kota Melbourne, saya ingin berbagi pengalaman yang menurut saya adalah contoh terbaik bagaimana bagusnya sistem  pendidikan tingkat dasar di Australia. Kebetulan tiga anak saya bersekolah di Clayton North Primary School.  Setiap  kali  mengantar-jemput,  selalu  saja  keceriaan, kegembiraan, dan suasana menyenangkan terpancar dari wajah mereka. Mereka selalu berceloteh mengenai apa saja yang terjadi di sekolahnya. Misalnya si kecil Sora bercerita dengan antusias bahwa dia mendapatkan penghargaan “student of the week” karena rajin membaca dan selalu tersenyum kepada teman-temannya ketika masuk kelas.
            Anak-kedua  kami  Jaeza  juga  tidak  kalah  semangat  menceritakan pengalamannya mendapatkan apresiasi dari gurunya karena sangat baik dalam melakukan riset (review) beberapa buku bacaan secara terstruktur dan sederhana. Dari cerita-cerita ringan itu, saya melihat bahwa sekolah di Australia mampu menghadirkan suasana yang menyenangkan untuk belajar. Di negeri kangguru ini, siswa diajarkan bagaimana konsep matematika itu ditempatkan dalam mengajarkan logika berpikir dalam budaya tutur. Mereka misalnya diajarkan perbedaan kecepatan jatuh sebuah benda akibat memiliki berat berbeda dengan ketinggian berbeda.
            Anak-anak langsung diajarkan praktik sebuah logika “peristiwa alam” dan kemudian diajak untuk menemukan rumus itu melalui  eksperimentasi  langsung.  Suatu  pendekatan  yang menggabungkan ketiga aspek pengajaran yakni olah pikir, olah rasa, dan olah karsa (tindakan nyata). Para siswa dilatih bagaimana memiliki keterampilan hidup, kebiasaan membaca setiap malam, menceritakan apa saja yang dibawanya dari rumah di depan kelas (show and tell), musik, dan belajar bersosialisasi.
            Suatu proses belajar  yang  dapat  menumbuhkan kemampuan berempati dan saling menghargai satu sama lain. Untuk menciptakan sekolah yang aman sekolah di Australia menerapkan aturan setiap siswa harus ditemani oleh minimal dua kawan ketika pergi ke toilet. Mereka menerapkan sistem “buddy”, siswa senior diwajibkan membantu, menemani dan menjaga siswa yunior jika mengalami kesulitan dan membutuhkan bantuan. Perilaku yang mengajarkan tanggung jawab dan kepemimpinan.
            Para siswa diberi tugas untuk menulis dan menceritakan siapa pahlawan mereka dan mengapa dianggap pahlawan. Siswa diajarkan berpikir kritis, rasional dan bertanggungjawab atas pilihannya. Tak jarang pilihan pahlawan anak-anak itu sangat unik, misalnya “tukang pengangkut sampah” karena  dianggap  telah berjasa  membuat lingkungan selalu bersih, sehat, dan jauh dari penyakit.
            Siswa  di  sini  sejak  dini  diperkenalkan  pentingnya tanggungjawab dan tugas setiap profesi pekerjaan yang mereka jumpai sehari-hari, misalnya polisi, pemadam kebakaran, dokter, insinyur hingga petugas petugas kebersihan. Anak-anak menjadi terlatih untuk memiliki kesadaran tinggi dampak buruk jika tidak mengikuti aturan mereka. Ada juga ujian nasional yang disebut NAPLAN Test. Tujuan utamanya ialah mengevaluasi sekolah dalam menerapkan metode belajar-mengajar (kurikulum) yang diukur melalui hasil test siswanya. Dengan demikian, siswa tidak terbebani untuk lulus atau tidak.
            Singkatnya anak anak di sekolah Australia tidak dicekoki oleh hukuman, hapalan rumus, beban mata pelajaran bahkan prestasi ujian nasional yang fantastis. Mereka hanya dilatih keterampilan hidup melalui pelajaran memasak, pertukangan, berkebun, pengenalan bahasa asing, dan penanaman karakter positif sejak dini. Untuk mengajarkan inovasi dan pola pikir kritis dan rasional, Australia melatih siswanya sejak SD untuk selalu membaca dan merefleksikan bacaannya melalui argumentasi yang terukur dan penulisan esai yang mampu melebihi batas imajinasi mereka.
            Kampanye ‘revolusi mental bangsa’, bukanlah sekedar jargon politis, melainkan sudah dipraktikkan di sekolah-sekolah dasar di Australia. Mereka hadir secara langsung menanamkan karakter positif dan optimis sejak dini melalui permainan yang menyenangkan, mudah,  terjangkau tanpa fasilitas mahal. Misalnya ada tradisi pemilihan school captain, semacam Ketua OSIS untuk tingkat SD. Para kandidat harus mendaftar  dan  menawarkan  program-programnya  lalu  mereka berdebat  di  depan  guru-guru  dan  teman-temannya.  Mereka berargumen  secara  bergantian,  tanpa  memotong  pembicaraan.
            Kebetulan anak sulung saya, Aliya Zahra terpilih sebagai school captain saat ia duduk di kelas enam. Ia terpilih bukan bukan hanya karena tawaran programnya dan keberaniannya berpendapat, tetapi karena kemampuannya menghormati pendapat orang lain.
            Kapan suasana seperti ini bisa dijumpai dan dinikmati oleh anak-anak kita di sekolah-sekolah Indonesia? Saya berharap, cerita-cerita tentang sekolah yang menyenangkan itu dapat dikumpulkan bersama dan dibagikan secara masif ke sekolah-sekolah di Nusantara. Mungkin upaya itu akan membantu menambah wawasan dan motivasi bagi para guru, orang tua, dan anak-anak di Indonesia untuk mendapatkan pengalaman bagaimana sekolah-sekolah di negara maju diterapkan.
Agar para orang tua dan stake holder pendidikan di Indonesia dapat berpikir kritis dan tidak terjebak oleh jargon “internasionalisasi” yang hanya menggunakan bahasa asing dan bekerjasama dengan institusi asing. Agar seluruh siswa dari berbagai lapisan masyarakat dapat dengan mudah merasakan bahwa internasionalisasi itu bukan hanya belajar dengan fasilitas mahal dan teknologi maju, tetapi justru menekankan aspek pendidikan karakter yang sebenarnya telah diajarkan oleh para leluhur bangsa.
