SCHOOL EXPERIENCE IN AUSTRALIA

PENGALAMAN SEKOLAH DI AUSTRALIA

     

          Sekolah dasar di Australia biasanya selalu memberikan penghargaan untuk berbagai macam pencapaian murid-muridnya. Namanya Achievement Award, sebagaimana yang dilakukan di SD Moreland Primary School di daerah Brunswick, Melbourne. Warga Indonesia Ahmad Syam yang menyekolahkan anaknya di sana menuliskan kesannya berikut ini.

          Senin (20/6) pagi di sekolah di mana saya menitipkan Ayla untuk belajar berlangsung seperti biasanya. Rutin di setiap awal pekan ada Assembly, sejenis upacara bendera meski tidak benar-benar sama karena dilakukan di dalam aula dan sambil duduk pula.

          Pada setiap Assembly diumumkan program-program kegiatan murid seminggu atau sebulan ke depan. Juga disampaikan hasil kegiatan yang telah dilakukan pekan-pekan sebelumnya. Bukan hanya itu, seperti biasa jejak rekam aktivitas murid di dalam kelas dan di per kegiatan sepekan sebelumnya diungkap. Murid yang dianggap menonjol dalam beberapa hal mendapatkan apresiasi dalam wujud Achievement Award. Penghargaan yang meski hanya dalam bentuk selembar kertas kecil dan (mungkin) secara materi tidak bernilai tetapi kerap ditunggu-tunggu para murid dan dibanggakan para orangtua, termasuk saya.

          Ada dua hal menarik dari Achievement Award tersebut yang menjadikan bukan sekadar pengumuman rutin per Assembly. Hal yang menjadikannya sebagai kegiatan biasa yang menghasilkan efek yang luar biasa.

            Pertama, Achievement Award berlangsung secara kontinyu mengikuti kegiatan Assembly. Achievement Award akan tidak diumumkan atau ditiadakan jika pada Senin juga tidak berlangsung Assembly. Kontinuitas tersebut seumpama mesin yang menggerakkan semangat murid tiada henti atau, seperti suatu benda yang berotasi pada sumbunya terus-menerus. Uniknya, meski Achievement Award rutin ‘berotasi’ tetapi setiap murid seolah menunggu sesuatu yang baru di hari Senin.

           Kedua, konten Achievement Award ini tidak melulu tentang prestasi akademik siswa dalam kelas atau di sekolah. Ini tidak semacam penyampaian mengenai peringkat akademik siswa, kalau pun dihubungkan dengan prestasi akademik bentuknya bukan dalam pola pemeringkatan tetapi pencapaian. Misalnya, suatu waktu Ayla pernah mendapatkan award karena berhasil menguasai satu sistem perhitungan dalam matematika.

          Jadi apa isi yang dominan dalam award tersebut? Selain prestasi dalam olahraga dan seni, award ini ternyata sangat-sangat mengutamakan relasi sosial murid, baik dalam kelas maupun di sekolah secara umum.

          Saya mengambil contoh bagaimana Achievement Award sungguh-sungguh ingin menguatkan kecerdasan sosial murid sebagai pendamping kecerdasan intelengsia mereka dari dua award terakhir yang diberikan kepada Ayla.

          Senin (30/5) lalu Ayla mendapatkan award For Excellent Listening and always Participating Well in Class, jika dialihbahasakan barangkali bunyinya Penghargaan karena telah Bertingkah Baik dan Aktif di dalam Kelas. Sebagai orangtua, saya tentu bangga plus senang mengetahui Ayla aktif di dalam kelas karena berpartisipasi aktif di kelas adalah dasar-dasar rasa percaya diri. Senangnya saya bertambah-tambah mengetahui sekolah mengapresiasi dan menumbuhkan kepercayaan diri murid dalam bentuk award.

           Hari ini, Senin (20/6), nama Ayla kembali disebut sebagai penerima award sekaligus Achievement Award ke-4 baginya sejak terdaftar sebagai murid 2015 lalu (Prep Class & Grade 1). Dalam lembaran kertas award berbunyi For All Your Help with Packing Up a Messy Activity in Art. Maksud award ini kira-kira untuk menilai Ayla yang telah ikut membantu gurunya merapikan ruangan setelah kegiatan kelas Art. Ikut membantu guru adalah cikal bakal dari senang membantu orang lain yang secara sosial menumbuhkan rasa empati dan simpati.

           Penguatan kecerdasan sosial memang tercantum dalam lembaran kertas Achievement Award. Sisi kecerdasan ini dianggap bagian yang mendukung keberhasilan murid kelak. Kunci sukses atau Keys to Success, berdasarkan lembaran Achievement Award, adalah confidence (percaya diri), persistence (kesungguhan), organisation (kerjasama), getting along (keharmonisan), dan emotional resilience (kemandirian emosional). Kunci sukses tersebut menyertakan nilai-nilai kebaikan seperti respek, bertanggung jawab, dan jujur.
          Semoga model sekolah dengan format pembelajaran di sekolah tempat Ayla belajar bisa tumbuh di mana-mana. Sekolah-sekolah yang membangun mentalitas murid, yang menumbuhkan keharmonisan dalam perbedaan, dan yang menguatkan kepedulian pada sesama. Sekolah yang tidak terjebak dalam angka-angka, peringkat, dan segala jenis akreditasi saja. Sekolah yang menyandingkan prestasi akademik dan prestasi sosial. Sekolah yang mengajarkan hidup yang lebih berdaya
